The Tatar State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet named after M.Jalil is one of the largest musical theaters in Russia, located in the center of Kazan on Freedom Square. The theater opened in 1956. The facades and interiors are designed in the modern Neoclassicism style, and combine classic forms with the Tatar national ornaments and elements of Applied Arts. In 2005, the theater was reconstructed to allow performances with complex scenography and lighting effects. The hall is designed for 955 people.
Twice a year, new performances (one opera and one ballet) appear in the repertoire. During the New Years holidays, the theater holds a festive setting for children.
Twice a year the theater holds international festivals such as the Shalyapin Opera and Nuriyev Ballet festivals.
