Islam was adopted as far back as 922 in the territory of Volga Bulgaria. The date of the Official Adoption of Islam in the Republic of Tatarstan is annually celebrated on May 21. The fest emphasizes continuity of generations, underlines the fact that Muslims have always been indigenous to Russia, and that Islam is one of the oldest religions in the country.
But why have our predecessors chosen Islam? As the story goes, in the 10th century, a local Khan’s daughter was ill. Neither domestic nor foreign healers could cure her, but two strangers have managed to overcome it. The wayfarers professed Islam, and this is precisely why the Khan accepted this doctrine and declared it to be the official religion of the country.
