The Kazan Zoological and Botanic Garden is the oldest zoological and botanic garden in Russia and one of Europe’s oldest institutions of its kind. It was founded at the University of Kazan by Karl Fedorovich Fuchs in 1806. At the moment, the zoological collection in the garden contains 145 animal species (1201 samples), 27 species of which are included on the Red List. The botanic collection contains more than 1000 plant species (5941 samples), among them 500 species have a protected status and 203 are unprotected, and 20 species are included on the IUCN Red List. Today, in the zoological and botanic garden’s greenhouse, you will find palm trees planted two centuries ago. The Zoological and Botanic Garden offers the following services: a tour of the zoo, horse riding, an intellectual adventure-type game called the Exploration in the Zoo, zoo therapy, and a display of animal groups.
