Kazan Zoological and Botanical Garden

The Kazan Zoological and Botanical Garden is the oldest in Russia and Europe. It was founded by Kazan University's Karl Fuchs in 1806. The Kazan Zoological and Botanical Garden is the only one in Russia that combines zoological and botanical collections. In the zoological collection of the garden there are about 160 species of animals, 25 of them are nearing extinction and have been included in the IUCN Red List. The botanical garden features over 1,000 plant species, and the greenhouse grows palm trees planted back in the 19th century. At the Zoological and Botanical Gardens you can book a tour, ride horses, play games or experience zootherapy. The Kazan Zoological and Botanical Garden has been a full member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) since 1996, and the Euro-Asian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EARAZA) since 1997. The Zoological and Botanical Garden is involved in seven international programs for breeding and conservation of rare animal species, as well as the creation of a worldwide electronic database of animals kept in captivity and cooperates with the Botanic Gardens Conservation International Council (BGCI).
